Shruti Kumar was elected to the New Haven Unified School District Board of Education in 2022. She is a Professor of Physics at a Bay Area public college and holds two Master’s degrees, one in Physics and one in Electronics. Committed to continuous learning as an elected leader, Shruti also completed the Masters in Governance program through the California School Boards Association (CSBA). In recognition of her dedication to public service and community leadership, she was honored as the California State Assembly’s Woman of the Year in 2025.
A Union City resident since 2005, Shruti and her husband have raised their three children in the New Haven Unified School District. As both a parent and educator, she is passionate about public education and believes every student deserves access to high-quality educational opportunities and the support needed to succeed.
Since 2009, Shruti has been an active volunteer in New Haven schools, serving as an Art Vistas docent, classroom volunteer, and parent leader. She has also mentored youth through STEM programs and nonprofit organizations and has served as a Scout Leader, helping develop leadership, character, and a commitment to service in young people.
As a Trustee, Shruti has focused on expanding educational opportunities, strengthening college pathways, improving school safety, and increasing community engagement. Her work has included advancing initiatives that expanded access to middle school Spanish, Speech & Debate, and Math Olympiad; strengthening the district’s partnership with California State University, East Bay; improving school safety and traffic flow; and increasing community engagement through her regular Chat With Your Trustee office hours and school visits.
