Dear New Haven Families,
Watching our fall sports teams at James Logan High School prepare for the fall sports season always fills me with optimism for the school year. This year, we are excited to add two new teams to our fall program: Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Flag Football. They had their first games on Wednesday, and both teams recorded their first victory! If you have the chance to attend a game, you will be impressed by their skill and by how enjoyable the games are to watch.
As we begin this school year, I would like to reaffirm our shared commitment to Goal 2 of our Strategic Plan, “Providing Accessible and Equitable Support for Students”. This is more than a goal; it is our collective promise to ensure every New Haven school is a place where respect, belonging, and kindness are lived out every day.
Last year, part of this commitment included expanding our non-discrimination and hate language policy. This meant making sure harmful language, such as the N-word, has no place in our school community. The N-word, and any language that diminishes or degrades, is not acceptable in any New Haven school or school activity. Words have power, and together we can choose to use them to uplift and unite.
We will continue this work this school year. Next week, you will receive a letter from your school principal, which will include a contract that we ask you to discuss with your child, sign, and return to your teacher. Thank you in advance for being a partner in this important work. Our children are watching, listening, and learning from us every day. Let’s continue to show them what it means to lead with respect, compassion, and integrity.
I am proud of the progress we have made, and I know that by working together with students, families, staff, and the community, we can continue to create schools where every person’s dignity is honored and protected.
