Dear New Haven Families,
As we celebrate Labor Day, I want to acknowledge the exceptional dedication and hard work of our staff. This holiday reminds us of the value of perseverance, collaboration, and commitment—all qualities that shine throughout the NHUSD community. Whether through the tireless efforts of our educators and support staff or the encouragement and partnership of our families, it is your contributions that make our schools strong and vibrant places for students to learn and thrive.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the staff and families at Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota who were victims of the senseless school shooting that took place earlier this week. Although these sorts of vile attacks are still exceptionally rare, they remain a threat that we take very seriously and prepare for.
Over the past few years, we have implemented several safety upgrades in our schools, including comprehensive camera systems and enhanced exterior fencing. We are also piloting a new technology at Hillview Crest Elementary School, where staff members carry a device that instantly notifies the office of any type of emergency occurring anywhere on the grounds. Besides being valuable safety tools, this system also has several instructional applications; it can amplify teachers’ voices through speakers in the classroom, is linked to an upgraded communication system throughout the school, and can provide real-time translation for students in over 300 languages. So far, the feedback from staff regarding these devices has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are exploring the possibility of installing them in all of our schools.
Though student and staff safety is never far from our minds, this is also the time of year when our sites and departments review their safety plans, ensuring that active shooter protocols are carefully examined and updated as needed.
In happier news, it is once again time for the New Haven Schools Foundation (NHSF) Mutt Strutt. This year, the Mutt Strutt will take place on Saturday, September 20. For more information about this event, please visit the NHSF Mutt Strut website. The NHSF raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for our students and staff members each year, and it counts on our support through events like the Mutt Strutt to make this happen.
Our strategic plan provides direction for the work we do every day and throughout the year. Our fourth goal is School, Family, and Community Connections, and some of the work in this area is focused on improving communication with our families. One of our projects has been the development and launch of the New Haven app, available for free in the usual app stores. To support our families in using this app, we have created a resource page to assist you, which can be found on our website under the Families Resources page.
