Dear New Haven Families,
“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”
These words from Martin Luther King, Jr. are certainly as poignant and relevant today as they were when he spoke them. As we enter the three-day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, it is an appropriate time for us to reflect on where we are as a district in terms of all being “in the same boat now” in regards to our equity work. In New Haven, we still haven’t reached a place where the outcomes for our students of color are the same as they are for other student groups.
Regretfully, we also continue to deal with racism. As recently as earlier this month, we investigated an incident in which racist graffiti was found at one of our sites directed toward non-white student groups. This is not something we take lightly; anyone participating in this type of activity will be subject to disciplinary action to the fullest extent possible.
Incidents like this also reinforce the need to continue the work in our Strategic Plan related to Goal 2: Equity, Access, and Achievement. We are committed to doing whatever we can to ensure that there are inclusive and equitable conditions for our students of color. Recently we had an outside group, Promise54, complete a diversity, equity, and inclusion audit of our district. We are looking forward to sharing the results of this audit and using them to help shape our equity work for years to come.
On a different note, with all of the flooding and other disasters we have seen related to the recent storms, I would like to give a big “shout out” and thank you to our Maintenance and Operations Department. What most people don’t know is that they have worked tirelessly and proactively to minimize any storm-related damage at our school sites, and we have been able to keep all of our schools open thanks to their hard work. Even when we experienced a power outage earlier this week at Eastin Elementary School, they quickly mobilized and hooked up one of our portable generators so that we were prepared to keep the power on. As part of our Strategic Plan, all of our schools have been retrofitted so that they can be powered by one of our three, mobile generators.
The New Haven Schools Foundation generously provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants to our students and teachers every year. To do this, they raise money through donations and fundraising events. Their biggest event of the year is the Diamonds in Education Gala, which is taking place on January 21 in the Mirage Ballroom. Please support our Foundation by either attending this event or bidding on items in the online silent auction. More information about this event can be found here. Estimadas familias de New Haven,

Estas palabras de Martin Luther King, Jr. son ciertamente tan conmovedoras y relevantes hoy como lo fueron cuando las pronunció. Al entrar en el fin de semana largo donde celebramos el Día de Martin Luther King Jr., es un momento apropiado para que reflexionemos sobre dónde estamos como distrito en términos de que todos estamos “en el mismo barco ahora” con respecto a nuestro trabajo de equidad. . En New Haven, todavía no hemos llegado a un lugar donde los resultados para nuestros estudiantes de color sean los mismos que para otros grupos de estudiantes.
Lamentablemente, también seguimos lidiando con el racismo. Recientemente, a principios de este mes, investigamos un incidente en el que se encontraron grafitis racistas en uno de nuestros sitios dirigidos a grupos de estudiantes no blancos. Recientemente tuvimos un grupo externo, Promise54, que completó una auditoría de diversidad, equidad e inclusión de nuestro distrito. Esperamos compartir los resultados de esta auditoría y utilizarlos para ayudar a dar forma a nuestro trabajo de equidad en los próximos años.
En una nota diferente, con todas las inundaciones y otros desastres que hemos visto relacionados con las tormentas recientes, me gustaría dar un gran “saludo” y gracias a nuestro Departamento de Mantenimiento y Operaciones. Lo que la mayoría de la gente no sabe es que han trabajado incansable y proactivamente para minimizar cualquier daño relacionado con la tormenta en nuestras escuelas, y hemos podido mantener abiertas todas nuestras escuelas gracias a su arduo trabajo. Incluso cuando tuvimos un corte de energía a principios de esta semana en la Escuela Primaria Eastin, rápidamente movilizaron y conectaron uno de nuestros generadores portátiles para que estuviéramos preparados para mantener la energía encendida. Como parte de nuestro Plan Estratégico, todas nuestras escuelas han sido modernizadas para que puedan funcionar con uno de nuestros tres generadores móviles.
La Fundación de las Escuelas de New Haven brinda generosamente cientos de miles de dólares en becas y subvenciones a nuestros estudiantes y maestros cada año.
