Dear New Haven families,
Next week, we join schools across California in celebrating Classified School Employee Week, a time to recognize the incredible contributions of the staff who help our schools run smoothly every day. Established by the state in 1986, this special week honors paraeducators, custodians, administrative assistants, food service workers, bus drivers, and many others whose hard work supports student learning and well-being.
These team members are often the first to greet your child in the morning and the last to say goodbye at the end of the day. Their dedication, care, and behind-the-scenes efforts make a lasting difference in our school community.
Please join us in showing appreciation to these essential members of our school family!
On Thursday, May 15, our human resources department hosted our annual “Cheers for the Years” event, where we honored our retirees and employees of the year. To date, we know that 39 employees will retire at the end of this school year. This is always a bittersweet moment; we are very happy for all our employees achieving this milestone and wish them the best of luck in retirement, but we know that losing their expertise and knowledge will be very difficult to replace. The “Cheers for the Years” event was a wonderful way for us to celebrate their retirements.
We had many worthy candidates for our Employee of the Year Awards; selecting an overall winner is always challenging. This year’s overall winners are:
CSEA Hesham “Mo” Moussa Classified Employee of the Year Site Winners:
- Charmaine Martin, James Logan High
NHTA Casey Rodriguez Teacher of the Year Site Winners:
- Sandor Verstrepen, Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle
For our administrators of the year, the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) sets the categories for these awards. This year’s ACSA award winners are:
- Ramon Camacho, César Chávez Middle, Principal
- Alicia Elbert, James Logan High, Co-Administrator
- Antoinetta Barriguete, Educational Services Center Confidential
- Rebecca McCurdy, Conley-Caraballo High, Classified Management
- Jennifer Hawkins, Student & Family Services, District Wide & Valuing Diversity
Finally, we all know that we have exceptional students in our district. Each year, I invite some of our graduating seniors to participate in a student panel so that they can share their experiences with everyone. You can watch this year’s panel here. At the end of the video, the students share their thanks and gratitude for some of our staff members who made a difference in their NHUSD journey.

La próxima semana, nos unimos a las escuelas de todo California para celebrar la Semana de los Empleados Clasificados de las Escuelas, un momento para reconocer las increíbles contribuciones del personal que ayuda a que nuestras escuelas funcionen sin problemas todos los días. Establecida por el estado en 1986, esta semana especial honra a los asistentes educativos, conserjes, asistentes administrativos, trabajadores del servicio de alimentos, conductores de autobuses y muchas otras personas cuyo arduo trabajo apoya el aprendizaje y el bienestar de los estudiantes.
Estos miembros del equipo son a menudo los primeros en saludar a sus hijos por la mañana y los últimos en despedirse al final del día. Su dedicación, cuidado y esfuerzos tras bambalinas marcan una diferencia duradera en nuestra comunidad escolar.

El jueves 15 de mayo, nuestro departamento de recursos humanos organizó nuestro evento anual “Cheers for the Years” (Salud por los años), en el que honramos a nuestros jubilados y empleados del año. Hasta la fecha, sabemos que 39 empleados se jubilarán al final de este año escolar. Este es siempre un momento agridulce; estamos muy felices por todos nuestros empleados que obtienen este logro y les deseamos la mejor de la suerte en su jubilación, pero sabemos que será muy difícil reemplazar su experiencia y conocimientos. El evento “Cheers for the Years” fue una manera maravillosa de celebrar sus jubilaciones.
