Dear New Haven families,
As Certificated Employee Appreciation Week ends, I want to, again, thank our teachers and other certificated staff members who support our students, including nurses, librarians, counselors, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, behavior specialists, program specialists, program managers, and substitute teachers, for their hard work and dedication to our students. If you haven’t thanked our certificated professionals yet, it is not too late to do so.
I would also like to thank and show appreciation to the mothers in the New Haven Unified School District community. Sunday, May 11, is Mother’s Day. This is a day when we honor mothers and others who have graciously stepped into the maternal role in multiple capacities. Studies and my own experience have shown that mothers have taken on more than their fair share of ensuring their children succeed in school and life. For this, and countless other reasons, I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the mothers and other maternal figures in our community. Thank you.
Congratulations to the James Logan High School Forensics team. Under Justin Kurup’s leadership, 63 of our students qualified for the state championships, with 24 reaching the semi-finals or finals. Three of our students emerged as state champions: Andrew Hernandez, Marvin Huber, and Emily (Milly) Fortunak. Congratulations again to Mr. Kurup and the JLHS team!
It is difficult to believe that only two weeks remain in the school year. At our board meeting on Tuesday, my team shared our end-of-the-year report with the board. You can view the end-of-year report here to learn more about what we accomplished this year and our plans for next year.

Estimadas familias de New Haven:
Al finalizar la Semana de Agradecimiento a los Empleados Certificados, quiero agradecer nuevamente a nuestros maestros y demás miembros del personal certificado que apoyan a nuestros estudiantes, incluyendo enfermeras, bibliotecarios, consejeros, especialistas del habla y lenguaje, psicólogos escolares, especialistas en comportamiento, especialistas en programas, administradores de programas y maestros suplentes, por su arduo trabajo y dedicación a nuestros estudiantes. Si aún no han agradecido a nuestros profesionales certificados, no es demasiado tarde para hacerlo.
También me gustaría agradecer y mostrar mi aprecio a las mamás de la comunidad del Distrito Escolar Unificado de New Haven. El domingo 11 de mayo es el Día de la Madre. Este es un día en que honramos a las madres y a otras personas que han asumido con generosidad el papel maternal en múltiples capacidades. Las investigaciones y mi propia experiencia han demostrado que las madres han asumido más de lo que les corresponde para garantizar que sus hijos tengan éxito en la escuela y en la vida. Por esta y otras innumerables razones, me gustaría expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento y reconocimiento a las madres y otras figuras maternas de nuestra comunidad. Gracias.
Felicitaciones al equipo forense de la preparatoria James Logan.
