Our Thanksgiving break, for me, always feels like the true beginning of the holiday season. One of the things I value most about our district is that we are home to students, staff, and families from so many cultures and traditions. Across the world, this time of year is filled with celebrations that honor the triumph of light over darkness, a reminder of hope, togetherness, and the small joys that brighten our days. Being part of such a diverse community gives us countless opportunities to learn from one another and to appreciate the many ways people bring light into their lives. On Tuesday, our board honored this diversity by proclaiming December as the Celebrations of Light Month. You can view this resolution here.
Previously, I shared a draft of the 2026-27 calendar, and the school board formally approved it on Tuesday. You can view a copy of the final draft here.
Also, at its meeting on Tuesday, our board approved a contract to bring a new system to all of our schools that will improve safety, communication, and the overall learning environment in every classroom. This system includes a wearable device for teachers with an emergency button that immediately alerts the office if help is needed anywhere on campus. It also functions as a microphone, projecting the teacher’s voice clearly through classroom speakers.
For students who are learning English as a second language, the system sends the speech picked up by the teacher’s microphone directly to the student’s laptop, where it is translated in real time into their home language, helping make instruction more accessible. In addition, it will upgrade the communication system between classrooms and the school office.
We piloted this system at Hillview Crest Elementary School with great success and are excited to expand it to all of our campuses.
Hillview Crest is a coding and robotics magnet school that partners with UC Davis to embed coding and robotics within the math curriculum for all students in grades TK-5. On Thursday, students had the opportunity to showcase their coding and robotics skills at the annual RoboParade. This event requires students to build robots and then code them to complete tasks along the parade route. The skills and tasks needed grow in complexity as students progress through grade levels. I am always amazed at how our students, even at the lowest grade levels, can grasp coding concepts and apply them.

Para mí, el descanso de Acción de Gracias siempre se siente como el verdadero inicio de la temporada de fiestas. Una de las cosas que más valoro de nuestro distrito es que somos el hogar de estudiantes, personal y familias de tantas culturas y tradiciones diferentes. En todo el mundo, esta época del año está llena de celebraciones que honran el triunfo de la luz sobre la oscuridad, un recordatorio de la esperanza, la unión y las pequeñas alegrías que iluminan nuestros días. Formar parte de una comunidad tan diversa nos da innumerables oportunidades para aprender unos de otros y apreciar las muchas formas en que las personas traen luz a sus vidas.
