Superintendent Friday Update Cover 2026-27

Dear New Haven Families,

Those of us who are a little older probably remember exactly where we were on September 11, 2001, when nearly 3,000 lives were lost. The anniversary of this tragic event is a good opportunity to remember and honor those who lost their lives, as well as their families and loved ones who continue to carry their loss.

We had our hottest days of the new school year this past week, and our Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units were working hard. We have over 2,000 HVAC units across the district, and while our Maintenance and Operations team works proactively to keep them running, some will fail throughout the year. In addition to our internal team, we contract with a responsive outside contractor to help us repair these units when they fail. Even so, repairs or replacements can occasionally take many days or weeks. Our principals work with our maintenance staff to provide alternatives when this happens. We are very fortunate in the NHUSD to have such a supportive community. Bond Measures M and N allow us to replace all units in our system: half with Measure M, which is complete, and the other half with Measure N, which is ongoing. There are nearby districts that do not have air conditioning in their classrooms at all!

It is not too late to provide input or apply to be part of the renaming committee for Cesar Chavez Middle School. The survey and application for the committee close next week on September 18. We have put all information about the process and how you can provide input in one place on our website, which you can access here.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

SPANISH TRANSLATION

Estimadas familias de New Haven:
