Dear New Haven Families,
Across the country, traffic around schools is a challenge. It can be even more challenging in California, because most of our schools were built during times when students walked to school and districts provided busing. During the information gathering stage before our last strategic plan was approved, transportation was identified as an item that many of our families would like to have. Only about 9-10% of students in California have access to home-to-school busing, and, like most districts, we don’t have buses or the funding to purchase them to start this type of transportation.
While we can’t provide home-to-school transportation for all our students, we were able to collaborate with the City of Union City to introduce a bus route that transports students from the South Hayward and Decoto neighborhoods to and from Cesar Chavez and Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School. The morning bus gets them to school in time for the start of the day, and there is a return route scheduled at the end of the school day to transport them back. For the past two years, Hillview Crest Elementary School (HVC) has partnered with UC Davis to integrate coding and robotics into the math curriculum. Last year, all teachers at all grade levels taught coding and robotics along with mathematics. Even transitional kindergarten (TK) students learned foundational coding skills along with letter and number recognition. In one year, this program increased math proficiency at Hillview Crest by 7%, as measured by State testing. Our school board recently designated HVC as a Coding & Robotics Magnet School. The hard work put in by the staff at HVC has not gone unnoticed and is being recognized by UC Davis at an upcoming event, captured in the flyer below. En todo el país, el tráfico alrededor de las escuelas es un reto. En California puede ser aún más difícil, ya que la mayoría de nuestras escuelas se construyeron en una época en la que los estudiantes caminaban a la escuela y los distritos proporcionaban transporte escolar. Durante la fase para obtener información antes de que se aprobara nuestro último plan estratégico, se identificó el transporte como una opción que muchas de nuestra familias desearían tener. 全美范围内的校园周边交通都是个难题，在加州这种情况尤为突出。我们多数校舍建于学生普遍步行上学、学区统一提供校巴服务的年代。在上轮战略规划获批前的调研阶段，交通服务被众多家庭列为迫切需求。目前加州仅有9-10%的学生能享受家校通勤班车服务，与本州大多数学区一样，我们既无现有校车资源，也缺乏购置车辆启动该服务的专项资金。
虽然无法为所有学生提供家校通勤服务，我们已与联合市政府合作开通了一条特殊线路，接送 South Hayward 区和 Decoto 社区的学生往返于 Cesar Chavez 中学和 Itliong-Vera Cruz 中学。早班车能确保学生准时到校，放学时段也有返程班车。更多关于8号公交线路的详细信息请查阅学区官网：校车路线信息。
