Dear New Haven Families and Community,
Over the past several years we have had a number of different incidents where racist graffiti was found on our school sites and in the surrounding community. When this happens, our principals inform the school community and work with law enforcement to identify the individual responsible. Sadly, this is an increasingly common problem for school districts across the country. In New Haven Unified, we took steps to proactively address this problem by launching our Anti-Hate Speech, Eliminate Hate campaign district-wide.
Unfortunately, we have had a number of incidents of racist graffiti on the James Logan High School campus this year. When they occurred, Mr. Polk, the Logan principal, followed the steps described above. Monday night I learned that there was another incident where racist and threatening graffiti was found. This graffiti used threatening language and racial slurs directed at many different racial groups that make up our schools and community. It is similar to graffiti that was found and addressed by Mr. Polk a couple of weeks ago. I understand that a picture of this threatening graffiti is being shared by members of our New Haven community.
While the graffiti does not contain any specific threats and is broadly directed at many racial groups that make up our community, we are taking this incident seriously and are working with the Union City Police Department (UCPD). We hope that they can help us identify this hateful individual. As always, we work with UCPD to assess any security or safety risks, and we follow their guidance in this area.
When we are able to identify the individual responsible, they will be subject to serious disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion. We will also pursue criminal prosecution to the degree possible. We do not tolerate and will not stand for any type of hate or racist-related conduct in our schools.
We know that incidents like this can be upsetting. If you or your student need any support to process this or similar incidents, please contact your school office. We have staff available to counsel and assist students and can dispatch additional support staff if needed.
As superintendent, I have the privilege of being on our school campuses almost every day. I routinely walk the Logan campus at lunch, during passing periods, and at other times of the day. What I see across our district are safe schools with wonderful, tolerant, and accepting students. It is a shame that the person responsible for this graffiti can cast a pall over our great district. We will do everything in our power to continue to make sure our schools are safe and identify whoever is responsible for these acts.

En los últimos años, hemos tenido una serie de incidentes diferentes en los que se encontraron grafitis racistas en nuestras escuelas y en la comunidad circundante. Cuando esto sucede, nuestros directores informan a la comunidad escolar y trabajan con la policía para identificar al individuo responsable. Lamentablemente, este es un problema cada vez más común en los distritos escolares de todo el país.
