Dear NHUSD Families,
Two weeks ago we made COVID Testing available to our students, staff, and family members. The response has been amazing here in New Haven and throughout the County and our partner, National Labs, has done a fantastic job. Unfortunately, National Labs has been stretched very thin due to the demand they are experiencing here and in our neighboring districts. Because of the high volume of testing that they are experiencing, they have informed us that, temporarily, they will only be able to provide testing to students and staff. They hope to be able to offer testing to family members again soon.
I would like to thank all of you for your continued patience and support. We, like all school districts in California, are dealing with a number of challenges that have either never existed before in our schools or are significantly more complicated than expected.
An example of a new challenge is managing the number of students moving in and out of quarantine status. To be clear, when a student is required to quarantine, it DOES NOT mean they have COVID. While we understand the need for the quarantine process, less than 1% of all students who have been quarantined have subsequently tested positive for COVID. The rules and procedures related to the quarantine process can be convoluted and complicated to implement. Our district and school site staff are spending a considerable amount of time working to make this process run smoothly and effectively while doing their best to provide our students with schoolwork while they are out. Our teachers deserve thanks for their efforts to provide work for students and to keep them connected with school during quarantine. Planning for quarantine is especially challenging because it can happen at a moment’s notice. An example of a challenge that is more complicated than it has ever been is finding staff. Hiring in all areas, especially for custodians, para-educators, and for all types of substitutes, is extremely difficult. This is, again, a problem occurring across California. This challenge has caused us to adjust the work we are doing across the district to make sure our school sites have as much support as we can give them during this difficult time.
On a positive note, our students love being back at school! I walk sites almost every day and am continually re-energized by seeing the joy and excitement exhibited by our students.

Estimadas familias del NHUSD,
Hace dos semanas hicimos la prueba COVID disponible para nuestros estudiantes, personal y miembros de familia. La respuesta ha sido increíble en New Haven y en todo el Condado y nuestro colaborador, National Labs, ha hecho un trabajo fantástico. Desafortunadamente, National Labs ha estado agobiado debido a la demanda que están experimentando aquí y en nuestros distritos vecinos. Debido al alto volumen de pruebas que se está realizando, nos han informado que, temporalmente, sólo podrán ofrecer pruebas a los estudiantes y al personal. Esperan poder volver a ofrecer las pruebas a los miembros de familia muy pronto.
Me gustaría agradecer a todos ustedes su continua paciencia y apoyo. Nosotros, como todos los distritos escolares de California, estamos enfrentándonos a una serie de retos que, o bien nunca han existido antes en nuestras escuelas o son significativamente más complicados de lo esperado.
Un ejemplo de un reto nuevo es manejar el número de estudiantes que entran y salen de cuarentena. Para que quede claro, cuando un estudiante debe estar en cuarentena, NO significa que tenga COVID. Aunque entendemos la necesidad del proceso de cuarentena, menos del 1% de todos los estudiantes que han sido puestos en cuarentena han dado posteriormente un resultado positivo de COVID. Las reglas y procedimientos relacionados con el proceso de cuarentena se pueden complicar y es difícil implementarlos. El personal de nuestro distrito y escuelas está dedicando una cantidad considerable de tiempo para que este proceso se lleve a cabo sin problemas y de manera eficaz, a la vez que hace todo lo posible para proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes el trabajo escolar mientras están ausentes. Nuestros maestros merecen un agradecimiento por sus esfuerzos para proporcionar trabajo a los estudiantes y mantenerlos conectados con la escuela durante la cuarentena. Un ejemplo de un reto que es más complicado que nunca es encontrar personal. La contratación en todas las áreas, especialmente para conserjes, paradocentes y para todo tipo de sustitutos, es extremadamente difícil. Este es, de nuevo, un problema que se da en toda California. Este reto nos ha hecho ajustar el trabajo que estamos haciendo en todo el distrito para garantizar que nuestras escuelas tengan todo el apoyo posible durante este tiempo difícil.
¡En un aspecto positivo, a nuestros estudiantes les encanta regresar a la escuela! Recorro los planteles casi todos los días y me llena de energía ver la alegría y el entusiasmo que exhiben nuestros estudiantes.
