e-News for Friday, September 3, 2021

The e-News is a weekly newsletter from the New Haven Unified School District that highlights student and staff achievement and provides information on upcoming events.

Dear NHUSD Families,

As we finish up the fourth week of our school year and head into Labor Day Weekend, I would like to recognize and thank our labor partners for their contributions to getting our school year off to a good start. The willingness of our teachers union (NHTA) and classified employees union (CSEA) to proactively work with us to identify issues and collaborate on solutions has made our schools better for everyone. Our management group also deserves a resounding “thank you” for making sure that everything is running as smoothly as it can at our sites.

This doesn’t mean everything has been perfect. It hasn’t been easy to reopen our schools and things are far from perfect. We (like most districts) are struggling to fill positions and to navigate the ever-changing rules around COVID exposures, contact tracing, testing, and safety protocols. However, the things that are going well can be attributed to the hard work of our employees, and to the collaborative efforts we have had with our labor partners.

We are currently focusing nearly all of our energy on ensuring that our students and staff have what they need to continue teaching and learning. Despite the challenges of the last eighteen months, we also recognize that we have accomplished a lot and that we need to keep looking and moving forward as a district.

On Tuesday, September 7, we will hold our first State of the District address that will highlight some of what we have been able to accomplish during the 2020-21 school year, the first year of our three year strategic plan. We will also forecast what we plan to accomplish during this school year. This address was originally scheduled to be an in-person event and celebration. However, one thing we have learned to do well over the past year is to adjust to changing circumstances. Given the current COVID health guidance and the current needs of our district, we have decided to stream and record this address instead. We will stream the event live beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, and will also have the video link available on our website. The video link to this event will be posted on our website, mynhusd.org, beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

While our students overwhelmingly are happy to be back in school, our students are feeling the same stresses we are experiencing as adults with what is happening at home, at school, and across society. This is compounded by our students having spent the last school year at home. This stress can occasionally manifest itself in conflict, and school districts in general are seeing an uptick in challenging behaviors and encounters. An example of this occurred at James Logan High School on Tuesday when there were four different altercations that occurred. As a district, we have no tolerance for any violence on our campuses, and we will take swift action with those who choose to solve their problems in this manner. We would much rather work with our students to assist them in resolving their conflicts before they devolve into a fight.

This year, we have added supports at all of our sites to assist students to be successful and navigate a return to in-person learning during very challenging times. Each of our sites has a new mental health resource center with staff to assist students with stress, anxiety, and conflict. This is in addition to the resources we have always had in place such as counselors and psychologists. Please encourage your students to take advantage of these resources.

The school guidance document put together by the Alameda County Office of Education has been updated to include new information and new flowcharts for staff and parents. That document can be found on our website and also found here: ACOE School Guidance.

That’s it for today. I hope you all enjoy your long three-day weekend.
