Dear New Haven Families,
In case you haven’t seen it, we have transitioned to a new website format. This is part of the work we are doing related to Goal 4 of our Strategic Plan: Community Outreach, Engagement, and Advocacy. You can check out our new format here: mynhusd.org. We hope you find this new format more user-friendly with better access to information. We will continue our efforts to improve our communication tools by transitioning all of our school sites to a new website platform during the 2022-23 school year.
New Haven Unified is going through the process of adjusting our trustee area boundaries based on data we received from the 2020 Census. There are only minor changes needed to balance our trustee areas that won’t change which areas our schools are in or the areas of our current board members. If you are interested in learning more about this process you can attend a Community Information Meeting next Tuesday, March 29 at 6:00 p.m. Information about this meeting and the next steps in our process can be found here. Unfortunately, we have become aware of two more disturbing TikTok trends. The first is called the “Orbeez TikTok challenge”. This encourages people to shoot unsuspecting bystanders with small, water-filled pellets. This is considered a criminal act and has led to juveniles being arrested in other school districts. We had an incident in one of our schools that may have been linked to this challenge. Please inform your students that we have no tolerance for this type of conduct and will pursue serious disciplinary action against anyone who is involved with this challenge. The second TikTok challenge is called the Blackout Challenge. This challenge encourages students to see how long they can go without breathing. I encourage you to speak with your students about this challenge as well to educate them about the dangers of participating in it.
March 31, 2022, is the Transgender Day of Visibility. To honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of our transgender students, staff, and communities, we will raise the transgender flag at our school sites during the week of March 28 – April 1. At a board meeting earlier this year, the NHUSD Board of Education passed a policy that will help protect the rights of our transgender students. Esto se considera un acto delictivo y ha llevado a la detención de menores en otros distritos escolares. Tuvimos un incidente en una de nuestras escuelas que pudo estar relacionado con este reto. Por favor, informen a sus hijos que no toleramos este tipo de conducta y que tomaremos medidas disciplinarias serias contra cualquiera que esté involucrado en este reto. El segundo reto de TikTok se llama “Blackout Challenge”. Este reto alienta a los estudiantes a ver cuánto tiempo pueden estar sin respirar. El 31 de marzo de 2022 es el Día de la Visibilidad Transgénero. Para honrar y celebrar los logros y la resiliencia de nuestros estudiantes, personal y comunidades transgénero, izaremos la bandera transgénero en nuestras escuelas durante la semana del 28 de marzo al 1 de abril. En una reunión del Consejo a principios de este año, el Consejo de Educación del NHUSD aprobó una política que ayudará a proteger los derechos de nuestros estudiantes transgénero.
