A Message From Superintendent Thompson (Spanish translation included)

Dear NHUSD Families,

Well, we made it! The 2021-22 school year is officially behind us. And what a year it has been. I am proud of our teachers and staff members who worked so hard to keep teaching and learning happening in our classrooms all year long. I am also thankful and appreciative of the support that our families have provided our schools and the district throughout the year.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that the terrible event that took place in Texas this week is something we will never forget. Sadly, when these types of events occur – and they occur way too often – people always ask us about the security measures we have in place. We are not and have not been waiting for our elected officials to do something to help schools.

Foundationally, we have comprehensive safety plans at all of our sites that are updated every year. We have also systematically been reviewing our safety needs across the district and have been addressing them. For example, we have new fencing and gate systems at several of our sites to prevent intruders from entering campus. We are also planning to install security cameras at all of our sites in three phases. Phase one is the James Logan High School campus and that work will start this summer. We will continue to do whatever we can in order to keep our students and staff members safe on our campuses.

As we head into summer, here are some things that you should know:

  1. COVID Testing – we will continue to offer COVID testing for our students, staff and families throughout the summer. You can find the schedule in the “Corona Virus Resources” link on our website;
  2. Labor Agreement – We reached a tentative agreement with our teachers’ association (NHTA) on Thursday evening. This agreement should provide some security and comfort for our certificated staff members as we enter summer. Specifics of the agreement will be released next week. We will begin the process with CSEA as well very soon;
  3. Mental Health Resources – For this school year, we were able to implement a mental-health plan funded with one-time dollars from the State.  Due to the unprecedented budget surplus that California is currently experiencing, we are anticipating that we will receive money from the State when they approve the budget that will enable us to continue support for mental health and socio-emotional support at all of our sites for next year and hopefully the next three years. We will have a presentation on this plan at our June 7 board meeting.
  4. Beyond the Bell / Alliance – Though the first enrollment window for our new before and after-school care program at the elementary and middle schools has closed, the second window is scheduled to open on July 25.  Visit our website by clicking here: Beyond the Bell for more information.

This will be my last Friday update until the start of the next school year. I will send out communications periodically throughout the summer to keep all of you updated with information you need to know as the 2022-23 school year approaches. Remember the first day of school for the 2022-23 school year is Wednesday, August 10.

I would like to end my final 2021-22 update with something positive and uplifting. Today I hosted a YouTube live event with some of our graduating seniors. In a word, they are all just AWESOME! You can view a recording of this event here.

I hope you all have a well-deserved summer break.

Sincerely,

John Thompson, Ed.D.

Superintendent

  1. Pruebas de COVID – continuaremos ofreciendo pruebas de COVID para nuestros estudiantes, personal y familias durante el verano. Usted puede encontrar el horario en el enlace “Corona Virus Resources” en nuestro sitio web;
  2. Acuerdo Laboral – Llegamos a un acuerdo tentativo con nuestra asociación de maestros (NHTA) el jueves por la noche. Este acuerdo debe proporcionar cierta seguridad y comodidad para nuestros miembros del personal certificado al entrar al verano. Los detalles del acuerdo se darán a conocer la próxima semana. Vamos a iniciar el proceso con CSEA también muy pronto;

Sinceramente,

John Thompson, Ed.D.

Superintendente
