Senior Payroll Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under limited supervision, to coordinate and personally perform responsible accounting and clerical work in connection with the timely preparation of payroll and related reports consistent with applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, bargaining contracts, and district policy, and do related work as required within the job description.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Directly responsible to designated administrators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Processes, audits and balances payroll for certificated and classified employees.
  • Performs complex accounting work requiring the use of independent judgment and initiative.
  • Analyzes, reconciles and audits complex payroll-related data, accounts and reports.
  • Prepares reconciliations and expenditure transfers when applicable.
  • Reconciles, balances and prepares monthly PERS, STRS reports for submission to the County Superintendent of Schools and/or the State of California.
  • Reconciles, balances and prepares quarterly and annual District tax reports.
  • Assists the Payroll Supervisor with general payroll problem solving and special projects, implementation of union contract language into the payroll process, and training of department personnel.
  • Understands accounting principles, practices and procedures and makes mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written directions and communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Performs related work consistent with the job description.

  • Hear and speak to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time. See to read a variety of materials.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Type at a speed of thirty-five (35) words per minute
  • Operate calculator, pass qualifying test.
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles and procedures.
  • Spreadsheet and word processing programs required.
