The New Haven Unified School District is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all students, staff, and visitors. We are fully prepared to support our students and staff in addressing risks such as fires, earthquakes, and the unlikely case of an active shooter on campus. Though unimaginable decades ago, active shooter events are now an unfortunate reality that we must prepare for.
During an active shooter event, the sole mission of New Haven staff is to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety and survival of our students and staff.
To enhance the safety of our students and staff in the event of such an incident, the New Haven Unified School District has adopted the widely promoted method for surviving an active shooter event of “Run. Hide. Fight.” developed by the Department of Homeland Security and the City of Houston and recommended by the Union City Police Department. We have curated a series of training videos explaining each step of the strategy. These videos serve as an initial phase in our comprehensive preparedness efforts. In addition to viewing these videos in class, teachers will lead classroom discussions with their students to review the recommended “Run. Hide. Fight.” strategies and practice the “Hide” portion of this recommended practice within their classroom. This will provide students and their teachers with a crucial opportunity to actively plan, practice, and tailor this strategy to their specific environment.
We encourage our families to review these videos to familiarize themselves with how the New Haven Unified School District will prepare their students and staff for such a difficult situation.
Our school sites are in the process of training staff and implementing these procedures. Before any active shooter drill at our schools in November, the school community will be notified by their school site in advance of the drill.
Additionally, we would like to share an article titled “Talking to Your Child about School Shooting Drills,” which offers guidance on how to discuss active shooter situations and drills with your child.
Together, we can ensure that our students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in any situation. We sincerely appreciate the partnership of our families and community as we work to protect and empower our children.
In compliance with Assembly Bill (AB) 1466, the New Haven Unified School District is committed to transparency and accountability in reporting data related to the use of behavioral restraints and seclusion. This data reflects our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students in our care while complying with state and federal regulations.
Assembly Bill 1466 requires that all local educational agencies collect and report specific data regarding behavioral restraints and seclusion to the California Department of Education annually. This data, which is disaggregated by race/ethnicity, gender, and disability status, must also be made publicly accessible on the district’s website.
Behavioral restraints and seclusion are only used when necessary to address immediate safety concerns, and the district remains dedicated to minimizing their use through proactive and supportive practices. Our educators and staff are trained in positive behavioral interventions and supports to create an inclusive and safe environment for all students.
We encourage community members to review this report as part of our shared commitment to fostering a culture of safety and transparency. If you have questions or would like more information about the policies guiding these practices, please contact our Special Services Department at (510) 471-1100, ext.60425.
