Stolen Words Written by Melanie Florence Illustrated by Gabrielle Grimard This book is about the loss of language and culture for First Nations people because of the residential schools. These schools operated between the 1880's until 1996. Children were taken from their homes and communities for the purpose of assimilation and conversion to Christianity. This story shows hope for the future and for the revitalization of culture and language and the role that education can play in this restoration.
Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message Written by Chief Jake Swamp Illustrated by Erwin Printup Jr. Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message is a special children's version of the Thanksgiving Address, a message of gratitude that originated with the Native people of upstate New York and Canada and that is still spoken at ceremonial gatherings held by the Iroquois, or Six Nations.
