Dear NHUSD Families,
Black History Month began on February 1, 2024. In recognition of the contributions made to our community by our Black students, staff members, and families, our school board passed a Black History Month resolution at the meeting on January 16, 2024. Our staff has also prepared, reviewed, and vetted relevant curricula for our teachers to use in their classrooms to supplement our board-adopted curriculum.
Black History Month is a valuable opportunity for all of us to reflect on our wonderfully diverse community. At New Haven Unified, we value the perspectives and richness that students, families, and staff members bring from all over the world. Our Belonging & Dignity initiative strives to provide staff and students with the tools to appreciate and welcome different perspectives and honor each other’s dignity to make all in our community feel like they belong in our schools. This initiative is especially important when societal issues impact our schools, such as the current conflict in Israel and Palestine. These events generate strong feelings that can create conflict and make students, staff, and families feel unwelcome or unsafe. This furthers our resolve and commitment to our Belonging & Dignity work. Our community can support us in this work by encouraging understanding and tolerance of multiple perspectives.
On Thursday, the Youth Voter Movement and the League of Women Voters were at James Logan High School to help eligible students register to vote. By the end of the event, they helped 823 students register to vote! I have the pleasure of interacting with our students daily, which makes me very hopeful for our future; I am convinced they will help improve our world. To do this, they need to have their voices heard, and a big step in this direction is being able to vote. The Youth Voter Movement and the League of Women Voters do a lot to facilitate this process.
Here is a reminder that on Tuesday, February 6, our school board will host the first of our two annual Celebrating Schools meetings. Tuesday’s event starts at 6:00 p.m. in the JLHS Performing Arts Center. It will also be live-streamed. The schools highlighted on that date are Cesar Chavez Middle School, Itliong Vera-Cruz Middle School, James Logan High School, Decoto School for Independent Study, Searles Elementary, Emanuele Elementary, and Pioneer Elementary. The remaining schools will present at our second Celebrating Schools meeting on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the same time and location.

Estimadas familias del NHUSD,
El Mes de la Historia Negra comenzó el 1º de febrero de 2024. En reconocimiento a las contribuciones hechas a nuestra comunidad por nuestros estudiantes negros, miembros del personal y familias, nuestro consejo escolar aprobó una resolución del Mes de la Historia Negra en la reunión del 16 de enero de 2024. Nuestro personal también ha preparado, revisado y aprobado el plan de estudios correspondiente para que nuestros maestros lo usen en sus salones como complemento de nuestro plan de estudios aprobado por el consejo.
El Mes de la Historia Negra es una valiosa oportunidad para que todos reflexionemos sobre nuestra comunidad maravillosamente diversa. En New Haven Unified, valoramos las perspectivas y la riqueza que los estudiantes, las familias y los miembros del personal traen de todo el mundo. Nuestra iniciativa Pertenencia y Dignidad se esfuerza por proporcionar al personal y a los estudiantes las herramientas para apreciar y aceptar las diferentes perspectivas y honrar la dignidad de los demás para que todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad sientan que pertenecen a nuestras escuelas. El jueves, el Movimiento de Jóvenes Votantes y la Liga de Mujeres Votantes estuvieron en la preparatoria James Logan para ayudar a los estudiantes elegibles a registrarse para votar. Al final del evento, ¡ayudaron a 823 estudiantes a registrarse para votar! Tengo el placer de interactuar a diario con nuestros estudiantes, lo que me hace tener una gran esperanza en nuestro futuro; estoy convencido de que ayudarán a mejorar nuestro mundo. Para ello, necesitan que se oiga su voz y un gran paso para lograrlo es poder votar. El Movimiento de Jóvenes Votantes y la Liga de Mujeres Votantes contribuyen en gran medida a facilitar este proceso.
Les recordamos que el martes 6 de febrero, nuestro consejo escolar será el anfitrión de la primera de nuestras dos reuniones anuales de Celebrando las Escuelas. El evento del martes comienza a las 6:00 p.m. en el Centro de Artes Escénicas JLHS. También se retransmitirá en directo. Las escuelas destacadas en esa fecha son la Secundaria César Chávez, la Secundaria Itliong Vera-Cruz, la Preparatoria James Logan, la Escuela Decoto para Estudios Independientes, la Primaria Searles, la Primaria Emanuele y la Primaria Pioneer. Las escuelas restantes se presentarán en nuestra segunda reunión de Celebrando las Escuelas el martes 19 de marzo de 2024, a la misma hora y en el mismo lugar.
