In 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 328 into law. Under the law, introduced by State Sen. Anthony Portantino, California’s middle schools can start required classes no earlier than 8:00 AM and high schools no earlier than 8:30 AM. Specific scheduling within those parameters is left to local school districts. The guidelines go into effect in the 2022-23 school year for most districts, including ours.
In our school district, this law will affect school start times and bell schedules for incoming middle and high school students beginning August 10, 2022.
Elementary schedules will remain the same.
The purpose of the legislation is to address adolescent sleep deprivation and its associated health risks, while creating conditions more conducive to academic success.
