Superintendent’s Message

Fall 2024

Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members:

I am excited to welcome our students, families, and staff back to our sites this school year. I would also like to thank our families and community members who supported our schools with the passage of Measure M approximately ten years ago. The benefits to our schools from this bond measure are significant. Although we are in the final stages of construction, much work is still being done. New makerspaces have opened at Eastin Elementary, Emanuele Elementary, Kitayama Elementary, Hillview Crest Elementary, and soon, Alvarado Elementary. You will also notice new surveillance systems installed at all elementary and middle schools and new fencing at Emanuele Elementary. These recent improvements, plus countless others, would not have been possible without Measure M.

While these improvements are fantastic, we have a long way to go to keep our schools the modern, innovative learning environments our students deserve. Most of our buildings are fifty to sixty years old and need upgrading. Unfortunately, we do not receive state or federal funding for facility improvements and rely on local revenue to help us. The New Haven Unified School District has Measure N on the November ballot to ask our community to continue to support us with our facility needs. Passage of Measure N would also allow us to take advantage of the state-sponsored Proposition 2 facilities initiative (if it passes).

This year is the first year of our new three-year strategic plan. The plan was created to meet the needs identified by our students, staff, and families and is based on five main goals:

Goal #1: Prepared & Empowered Students All students are prepared for life, college, and careers by participating in relevant, rigorous, innovative, and accessible learning experiences.

Goal #2: Accessible and Equitable Support for Students Students’ social-emotional, behavioral, and academic needs are met systematically and comprehensively, which values dignity and creates belonging.

Goal #3: Valued and Engaged Employee Partners All staff are partners who feel like they belong and have the opportunity to help create equitable access to learning for our students.

Goal #4: School, Family & Community Connections Students and families will have access to information and district resources in a manner that fosters inclusiveness and belonging.

Goal #5: Safe, Innovative, and Sustainable Learning Environments Safe and innovative learning environments will be maintained and improved while incorporating sustainable practices and enhancing fiscal stability.

Our district and site plans and activities will be built around these goals over the next three years. You will see a lot more information about these plans and activities over this year.

Estimados estudiantes, padres y miembros de la comunidad:

Estoy emocionado de dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal este año escolar. También me gustaría agradecer a nuestras familias y miembros de la comunidad que apoyaron a las escuelas con la aprobación de la Medida M hace aproximadamente diez años. Los beneficios para nuestras escuelas de esta medida son significativos. Aunque estamos en las etapas finales de la construcción, todavía hay mucho trabajo por hacer. Se han abierto nuevos makerspaces en las primarias Eastin, Emanuele, Kitayama, Hillview Crest y pronto en Alvarado. Usted también notará sistemas de vigilancia instalados en todas las escuelas primarias y secundarias y rejas nuevas en la primaria Emanuele. Estas mejoras recientes, además de otras innumerables, no habrían sido posibles sin la Medida M.

Si bien estas mejoras son fantásticas, tenemos un largo camino por recorrer para que nuestras escuelas sigan siendo los entornos de aprendizaje modernos e innovadores que nuestros estudiantes merecen. La mayoría de nuestros edificios tienen entre cincuenta y sesenta años y necesitan mejoras. Desafortunadamente, no recibimos fondos estatales o federales para mejorar las instalaciones y dependemos de los ingresos locales para ayudarnos. El Distrito Escolar Unificado de New Haven tiene la Medida N en la boleta electoral de noviembre para pedir a nuestra comunidad que continúe apoyándonos con nuestras necesidades de instalaciones. La aprobación de la Medida N también nos permitiría aprovechar la iniciativa de instalaciones de la Proposición 2 patrocinada por el estado (si se aprueba).

Este año es el primero de nuestro nuevo plan estratégico trienal. El plan fue creado para satisfacer las necesidades identificadas por nuestros estudiantes, personal y familias y se basa en cinco metas principales:

Meta #1: Estudiantes preparados y capacitados Todos los estudiantes están preparados para la vida, la universidad y las carreras profesionales participando en experiencias de aprendizaje relevantes, rigurosas, innovadoras y accesibles.

Meta # 2: Apoyo accesible y equitativo a los estudiantes Las necesidades socioemocionales, de comportamiento y académicas de los estudiantes se satisfacen de forma sistemática e integral, lo que valora la dignidad y crea pertenencia.

Meta #3: Colaboradores valorados y comprometidos Todo el personal se siente partícipe y tiene la oportunidad de contribuir a crear un acceso equitativo al aprendizaje para nuestros estudiantes.

Meta #4: Conexión entre la escuela, la familia y la comunidad Los estudiantes y las familias tendrán acceso a la información y a los recursos del distrito de una manera que fomente la inclusión y la pertenencia.

Meta #5: Entornos de aprendizaje seguros, innovadores y sostenibles Se mantendrán y mejorarán entornos de aprendizaje seguros e innovadores al tiempo que se incorporan prácticas sostenibles y se mejora la estabilidad fiscal.

Los planes y actividades de nuestro distrito y escuelas se basarán en estas metas durante los próximos tres años. Verán mucha más información sobre estos planes y actividades a lo largo de este año.

Deseo ver a todos en nuestras escuelas y eventos, y espero que todos tengan un gran comienzo para el año escolar 2024-25.
