Dear NHUSD Families,
As we usher in the culturally rich month of September, we are excited to invite you to join us in celebrating National Latinx Heritage Month. This special time of the year, which runs from September 15th to October 15th, is an opportunity for us to honor and embrace the vibrant Hispanic and Latinx cultures that have contributed so much to our nation’s history and identity. National Latinx Heritage Month provides us with the chance to learn, appreciate, and share in the traditions, art, music, food, and stories that have shaped the lives of millions of Americans of Hispanic and Latinx descent. It’s a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latinx individuals in various fields, including arts, sciences, politics, and sports. At Tuesday night’s Board meeting, the trustees passed a resolution recognizing September 15 through October 15 as National Latinx Heritage Month. You can read that resolution by clicking here.
In case you haven’t heard, Trustee Shuen-Mallory will be moving out of their trustee area and will resign from their seat effective October 31, 2023. On Tuesday of this week (September 12), during our regular school board meeting, our school board discussed how they would like to fill the board vacancy. Since Trustee Shuen-Mallory’s term ends in November 2024, and holding an election to fill this seat would be very costly, our Board provided direction to staff to prepare to fill this seat by the provisional appointment process described in our board policy. They will take action to do this during our October 3 board meeting. In brief, what this means is that we will advertise this seat vacancy, and then the Board will interview eligible candidates. This process will take place throughout October and November. If you or someone you know lives in Trustee Area 2, which makes up the South Hayward and Decoto areas of our district and is interested in becoming a school board member, look for the information we will be sending out in early October about how to apply for this position.
During our board meeting on Tuesday, I also provided an update on our facility use process. Staff will present recommended revisions to this process and rental rates to the Board on 10/3 to get feedback from our Board. We will hold a public hearing on these changes on October 19, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in our Educational Services Center. Any interested parties should attend this meeting to share their thoughts so that our Board can consider them before taking any action on revisions to this policy.

El Mes Nacional de la Herencia Latinx nos brinda la oportunidad de aprender, apreciar y compartir las tradiciones, el arte, la música, la comida y las historias que han dado forma a las vidas de millones de estadounidenses de ascendencia hispana y latinx. Es un momento para reconocer las invaluables contribuciones de las personas hispanas y latinx en diversos campos, incluidas las artes, las ciencias, la política y los deportes.
